In this position, you will work with Professor Bronwyn Laycock on delivering against the research programs of two newly awarded ARC Discovery grants, one on Controlling the lifetime of biodegradable polymers in natural environments and one on Biodegradable and bioderived coatings for controlled release fertilizers. The focus will be on the design and manufacture of novel modified polyhydroxyalkanoates for use in a range of applications, including fertilizer coatings and flexible films, and to develop bulk polymer chemistries for PHA modification (such as grafting and block copolymer production).Key responsibilities will include:Research: The goal is to modify the chemistry of biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) to create functional materials like block and grafted copolymers. These materials will be fully characterized using advanced techniques, and processes will be developed for in-situ production of PHA-based polyurethane block copolymers for urea coatings. Research outputs will be published in high-quality outlets, and applications for competitive funding will be pursued. Collaboration with colleagues on joint research projects and funding applications is key, alongside efforts to transfer knowledge, technology, and UQ intellectual property for commercialization. A coherent research program and profile will be developed, with an emphasis on best practice methodologies.Teaching: Participate in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching as needed, ensuring quality based on approved surveys and student outcomes, and innovate in response to feedback.Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, demonstrating personal effectiveness in managing researcher development. Lead and develop supervisees by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development. Manage research support staff in accordance with university policies and promptly address conflicts or grievances following university procedures.Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.This is a research-focused position.
