Assistant Directors (EL1), Methodology and Data Science Division The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill Assistant Directors (EL1), Methodology and Data Science Division.Successful applicants can work either full-time or part-time hours from one of our offices located in either Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Geelong, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney, although a hybrid model of working from home and the office applies.The key duties of the position include: About the role Leading and managing a portfolio of methodological work, under limited supervision from their Director, and providing important methodological advice and assistance to other parts of the ABS.Leading and managing a small team of mathematical statisticians and/or data scientists (typically 3-5 staff, some of whom may be located in other offices) to deliver an annual program of work.Supervising, developing or mentoring staff to ensure they have the necessary capability to deliver high quality methodological solutions.Developing and maintaining strong collaborative working relationships with a range of clients and stakeholders.Undertaking complex analytical tasks, research projects and empirical studies, and producing timely, and statistically sound solutions, technical reports and client briefings.Presenting the results of methodological work to internal and external audiences in meetings, seminars, and conferences. What we are looking for (selection criteria) To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience: A strong understanding of one or more of the following areas with extensive practical experience:a.survey design, sampling, statistical editing and imputation, estimation and quality assessment methods.b.statistical disclosure control.c.experimental design.d.analytical methods such as time series analysis, statistical modelling, predictive analysis, Bayesian inference, pattern recognition, and data visualisation.e.data integration and methods supporting statistical production with multiple data sources.f.advanced data science techniques and practices such as AI / machine learning, graph theory, natural language processing, knowledge discovery, and agent-based models.g.novel data structures (such as knowledge graphs) and high-performance computing techniques and platforms (such as parallelisation, elastic computing resources, Spark, and GPU-based application acceleration).h.statistical computing languages (such as R, Python, SAS, and Stata).High proficiency in planning and managing work outputs and the ability to deliver quality, customer-focused outcomes within a dynamic and complex environment.Strong conceptual thinking skills, and the ability to identify problems, assess their significance, explore possible scenarios, and develop innovative solutions.Proven ability to work effectively and supervise staff in a multidisciplinary and geographically distributed team, and to supervise and/or develop specialist staff in a high-performance culture.Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to convey complex and sensitive information and work collaboratively with a range of clients and stakeholders. Academic qualifications or equivalent experience in mathematics, statistics, data science, physics, economics/econometrics, computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, or another field with a strong quantitative component are highly desirable.An honours-level or post-graduate degree is a further advantage.A demonstrated ability to learn and apply new methods and technologies will also be highly regarded.Eligibility You must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply.For most positions you will need to obtain (or hold) and maintain a Baseline security clearance.ABS employees who have access to market sensitive information are restricted in market trading activities.In these cases, you may not be allowed to trade in financial products while employed.Some of the positions are restricted in trading.
