Located in northwest Queensland, Cannington boasts an underground mine and processing facility situated approximately 800 kilometres west of Townsville and a concentrate handling facility at the Port of Townsville.Flights are direct to the onsite airport, and the mine is only 3.5 km from camp—the perfect distance for a sunset walk or run home along a purpose-built walking track. The onsite accommodation includes meal services, sports/gym facilities, swimming pool, music room, and social area.WHAT SOUTH32 OFFERSAbility to purchase up to 4 weeks of additional annual leaveThe opportunity to become a shareholder of South32 through our share plans26 weeks full-paid, or 52 weeks half-paid parental leave for primary carersAnnual short-term incentive bonus that recognises both your individual performance and the overall success of the businessABOUT THE ROLEThis is a permanent position on an 8:6 roster, FIFO from Townsville/Brisbane/Cairns or DIDO from Mount Isa to Cannington.As the Geotechnical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing timely, high-quality geotechnical guidance to effectively support Planning, Scheduling, and Mining Execution departments.Other key responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:Conduct site investigations to assess geotechnical conditions in the field for design purposesEvaluate the stability of stopes and tunnels to ensure safety and integrityDevelop ground support systems and recommend strategies for rockfall mitigationImplement monitoring programs, including seismic data analysis, damage mapping, and Lidar convergence assessmentIdentify geotechnical risks and ensure compliance with relevant regulationsABOUT YOUYou will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:Experience in hard rock, underground operation - ideally with open stope mining methodsProblem solving skills which employ a risk-based approachStrong communication skills and desire to be a team playerQualifications for this position are:Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical, Geology, Civil, or Mining Engineering and/or Post Graduate Geotechnical/Rock MechanicsSouth32 is committed to building and maintaining an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the communities in which we operate.
