A Northern NT hospital requires a Specialist in Psychiatry from 30/09/2024 to 20/12/2024.
Request for a Consultant Psychiatrist to provide cover for three months when the incumbent psychiatrist goes on Sabbatical leave from 1 October to 20 December 2024. This position is primarily a community post providing specialist mental health care within a multidisciplinary team to the rural and remote area of the Top End in the Northern Territory. It involves visits to remote communities, support to the local regional hospital via the emergency department, support to the DMOs in making admission decisions and involvement in planning discharge from the inpatient service in Darwin. You will be well supported by a vibrant and knowledgeable mental health team with nurses, OT, social worker and psychologists. You will be immersed in the Aboriginal culture, learning the ways of her people and soaked in the beauty of the land. This post has no on-call responsibilities giving you the opportunity to enjoy the grandeur of the outback as it meets the tropics discovering a region full of gorges, misty waterfalls, thermal springs, and ancient cultures.
The challenges and opportunities in health and community care in the Territory are like no other in Australia, from remote Aboriginal health to tropical health and urban tertiary care. You will be provided with a family accommodation, a car and flights to Darwin as appropriate. You will enjoy the flexibility of telehealth psychiatry and work/life balance. The town of Katherine has a population of approximately 11,000 and services the Big Rivers Region, which has a population of around 22,000 and covers a geographical area larger than Victoria. Most people in the region outside of Katherine reside either in small remote communities, or on cattle stations. Katherine also has a busy tourist season, and sees lots of travellers in the hospital throughout the Dry Season. The Katherine region offers a multitude of outdoor, camping, fishing, four-wheel driving, hiking, and mountain biking activities. It is close to Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, Katherine Gorge, and in relatively close proximity to other places such as the Kimberley, Gregory National Park, Mataranka hot springs, the Red Centre, and countless other bush camping sites. While offering these natural wonders, it is also only a 3 hour drive up the fully-sealed Stuart highway to the city of Darwin, which provides ample shopping and restaurant opportunities. The town has a young population, also being the service centre for the Tindal Airforce base – there are lots of cafes, playgrounds, a large pool, a library, multiple primary schools, and a two high schools.
