About the Role
Azooa, a leading digital consultancy in Canberra, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to support the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. This is a 6-month onsite contract opportunity based in Canberra, ACT, with a mid-May 2025 start date .
In this role, you’ll become a vital part of the ICT Operations Branch, ensuring the security, stability, and performance of critical infrastructure used by department staff and Ministerial Offices. You’ll lead the day-to-day operations of the Department’s primary data centre, take ownership of key physical infrastructure including UPS and AC systems, and serve as the department’s go-to technical expert for data centre upgrades.
Position Details
* Title: Senior Infrastructure Engineer
* Location: Canberra, ACT (Onsite – flexible arrangements possible with manager approval)
* Contract Duration: 6 months
* Estimated Start Date: Monday, 12 May 2025
* Extension Terms: Not applicable
* Hours: Full-time – up to 40 hours per week
* Clearance: Australian Citizenship required (Baseline clearance or ability to obtain)
* Work Environment: Onsite with potential for hybrid flexibility depending on business needs

Key Responsibilities
As the Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the reliable and secure operation of the Department’s data centres, with a strong focus on physical infrastructure, performance monitoring, and vendor coordination.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Data Centre Operations & Monitoring
* Lead the day-to-day operation and oversight of the Department’s primary data centre
* Conduct rack management, structured cabling, and physical space optimization
* Coordinate with third-party vendors for scheduled maintenance, support, and compliance
* Monitor environmental performance and infrastructure health using tools such as:
* vROPs (vRealize Operations Manager)
* EcoStruxure DCO/DCE
* Enforce security policies and best practice frameworks to maximise uptime and reduce risks
* Provide after-hours on-call support as required, aligned with the ICT Operations team's structure
1. Infrastructure Upgrades & Modernisation Projects
* Take ownership of the upcoming data centre infrastructure upgrade project focused on:
* Replacement of aging UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) units
* Replacement/upgrade of air conditioning (AC) systems
* Provide technical leadership in collaboration with third-party installers and engineers
* Evaluate market offerings and assist with research, RFI, and selection activities
* Offer expert insight into the advantages, disadvantages, and applicability of various UPS and AC systems based on departmental needs
* Ensure continuity of services and minimal disruption during installation and transition
1. Documentation & Process Standardisation
* Develop, maintain, and improve detailed infrastructure design documentation
* Create operational guides and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for:
* Daily operations
* Incident response
* Maintenance cycles
* Provide technical input into architecture reviews and strategic infrastructure planning
1. Stakeholder Engagement & Team Collaboration
* Collaborate closely with internal teams across ICT Operations, Security, and Projects
* Present technical proposals, risks, and benefits to senior stakeholders and project teams
* Coach and mentor junior team members and help uplift technical maturity
* Contribute to knowledge sharing, internal training, and capability building
What We’re Looking For
To thrive in this role, you’ll need a solid foundation in enterprise infrastructure and data centre operations, paired with strong communication skills and a collaborative approach.
Essential Criteria
1. Proven experience in daily operation of enterprise data centres
* Strong hands-on experience with rack management and cabling
* Ability to work with vendors and service providers for maintenance, upgrades, and compliance activities
* Familiarity with monitoring and performance tools like vROPs and EcoStruxure DCE/DCO
* Knowledge of security best practices, infrastructure hardening, and resilience planning
1. Demonstrated experience in UPS and AC upgrades in critical environments
* Ability to assess and compare vendor technologies and systems
* Research and analysis capability to make informed, technically sound recommendations
* Understanding of installation requirements, risk mitigation, and project timelines
1. Strong documentation and process development skills
* Experience writing technical design documents, operations manuals, and build guides
* Familiarity with structured documentation methodologies (e.g., ITIL, ISO, Agile delivery environments)
1. Outstanding communication and team collaboration skills
* Ability to clearly communicate complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
* Capable of delivering briefings and updates to internal and external audiences
* Willingness to provide mentoring and contribute to team uplift
Desirable Criteria
* Understanding of Government security standards, particularly:
* The Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF)
* The Essential Eight mitigation strategies
* Experience working in secure, classified environments
* Familiarity with compliance frameworks and audit preparation in Government
