As our Senior Extension Officer (Carbon), you will: • Build and maintain effective collaborative partnerships within DAF; across government; industry (e.g.
Queensland Farmers Federation, Natural Resource Management bodies, AgForce and Meat and Livestock Australia); research institutions and transition groups to reduce Queensland's greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a carbon net zero economy by 2050, particularly in the agriculture sector.
• Support implementation of the Queensland Low Emissions Agriculture Roadmap 2022-2032 and key research, development and extension projects that deliver on the Queensland Climate Adaptation Strategy 2017-2030.
• Deliver and assist in the design of the agency's carbon extension program.
• Deliver educational workshops and work with livestock producers to undertake on-farm scenario analyses to demonstrate herd, land, financial and greenhouse gas emission outcomes of best practice management.
Guide and mentor producers on how to achieve carbon neutrality and how to take advantage of environmental markets including carbon farming, natural capital, reef credits and biodiversity conservation.
• Provide expert advice on how to integrate low emissions technologies and practices into their livestock operations and advice on pathways for landholders to participate in carbon markets and certification schemes including carbon farming, natural capital, reef credits and biodiversity conservation.
• Assist with the adoption of agricultural climate change and greenhouse emissions reduction research, development and extension (RD&E) and policy initiatives to increase the proportion of agribusinesses implementing climate-resilient and emissions reduction management practices.
• Support DAF staff to build knowledge and skills in effective research, demonstration and extension of options to evaluate and demonstrate industry sustainability.
• Ensure that project deliverables are of a high standard and are delivered to influence adoption by industry, and that project management and governance processes are exemplary of a leading RD&E organisation.
• Provide professional leadership in developing high performing teams through mentoring staff, creating measurable and attainable goals, and building strong morale.
• Provide guidance to senior management on issues relating to external reporting on emissions reduction targets, the management of climate risk, climate change science and policy.
Mandatory qualifications • For appointment to the Professional Officer stream, you must possess an Australian bachelor's degree (AQF level 7 or equivalent) or higher in Animal, Agricultural or Environmental Science from a recognised tertiary institution.
Licences and registrations • A current 'C' class drivers' licence.
• Vaccinated for Q fever or willing to be or produce evidence or prior immunity.
Might also have: • Post-graduate qualification in a science field is desirable.
• Agricultural extension experience and an understanding of the beef industry in Queensland and/or northern Australia.
• The position will include travel for extended periods across south west Queensland regions.
