The Communications Advisor works alongside the Senior Communication Advisor to deliver Gladstone communication for Rio Tinto. An experienced hands-on communicator, the successful applicant will be an industry professional, capable and experienced in an often fast-paced environment. Working collaboratively with Gladstone and Brisbane teams, they will have strong writing skills and a good track record of delivering planned communication tactics with limited supervision. They’ll be considered a safe set of hands with the basics, including day to day site communications and also understand when to escalate issues and opportunities – aligned with the Rio Tinto communication framework. The successful applicant will be comfortable engaging with a broad range of stakeholders. Their role is a busy one and they should be results-driven and confident in prioritising tasks and activities as required. They will be naturally curious with a drive to improve the experience – particularly for front line employees at BSL and Yarwun – building employee support for our Gladstone sites and Rio Tinto’s broader Pacific aluminium business. Accountabilities Based in Gladstone and reporting to the Communications Manager, PacOps, the role has the following responsibilities: • Support high quality communication for Rio Tinto in Gladstone with a focus on local operations at both Boyne Smelter and Yarwun refinery, by working collaboratively with the Senior Advisor Communication, site leaders and employees as well as Rio Tinto’s corporate functions, in alignment with Rio Tinto’s global communication framework. • With the Gladstone Senior Communication Advisor and central Brisbane team, support execution of internal and external communication plans for BSL, Yarwun and Gladstone as well as broader internal and external communications.
• Influence site-based team members in best practice communication methods. • Work with Senior Communication Advisor to: • Deliver end to end GM communications for Yarwun and BSL, including video messages and employee town halls. • Support and host VIP site visits and events including media events • Roll-out Rio Tinto-wide programs or activities. • Source, generate and produce communication materials, including writing stories, producing electronic newsletters, creating digital signs and filming videos etc. • Prepare of award submissions, speeches and presentations for leaders. • Execute any other tactics and activities as required. Critical experience • At least 3 years’ experience in a communications role in the mining or manufacturing industry. • A bachelor’s degree or demonstrated keen interest and experience in communications or related discipline/field such as journalism, public relations or marketing. • Video production experience – preferably in a mining or ‘high-vis’ environment. • Strong writing and editing skills. • Creativity, initiative and curiosity.
