The Law Society of New South Wales is looking for a full time Lawyer to join our Access to Justice team for a period of 7 months.About the teamThe Access to Justice Department supports the Law Society in its mission to improve the image of solicitors in NSW and provides relevant legal information and representative services by:Operating the Dispute Resolution Practice, which incorporates all elements of Law Society activities relating to the promotion and delivery of alternative dispute resolution services to the legal profession and the community.Operating the Solicitor Referral Service, which puts members of the public in touch with law firms that fit their specific situation and needs.Operating the Locum Service, which connects firms seeking short or fixed-term assistance with experienced substitute solicitors.Operating a Legal Information Service to members of the Law Society to assist them in their practise.Operating the Pro Bono Scheme, including the referral of members of the public to appropriate law firms.About the roleThe Lawyer, Access to Justice reports to the Manager, Access to Justice and is primarily responsible for operating the Legal Information Service, as well as providing support to the Department's Alternative Dispute Resolution programs.What you'll be doingProvide legal information to members of the Law Society contacting the Legal Information Service via telephone or email. Common information requests relate to property law, the Legal Profession Uniform Law and Regulations, wills and estates, family law, civil law and practice management inquiries.In appropriate matters, refer relevant inquiries to the other Law Society departments such as Registry, Trusts and Ethics or external organisations.Provide detailed and accurate information to callers about the various Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) programs the Law Society administers.Consider and review the relevant legal documentation provided by an applicant in order to identify the relevant ADR Clause, any pending court dates and any other relevant matters. Request outstanding documentation/information as required. Use this information to determine the nature of the dispute and the skills and experience required by any appointed practitioner.Discuss the matter with the proposed practitioner in order to describe the dispute accurately including the relevant ADR clause or order and answer any of their questions.Prepare accurate documentation for Presidential Appointments and Presidential Nominations.About youAdmitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW and the holder of a current Australian practising certificate (or be immediately eligible for one).Minimum of two years recent post admission legal experience working as a solicitor.Current working knowledge of various areas of law including property law, wills and estates, family law and civil law highly desirable.Demonstrated legal research experience.Ability to prioritise and manage a high-volume case load in a demand driven environment and work within a team.A commitment to providing professional and timely customer service in a team environment driven by external demands.Flexibility and willingness to adapt to the fluctuating volume of work of the service and to adapt to the demands of a constantly evolving workplace environment.Communication skills including effective telephone, questioning, and listening techniques.High level of interpersonal skills including courtesy, ability to develop rapport, empathy and tolerance.Proven ability to use clear, concise language in correspondence and accurately draft legal documentation.Demonstrated ability regarding computer skills, including excellent word processing capabilities, proficiency with email, internet applications, database applications and experience using programs such as MS Word, Access and Excel.Ability to show initiative and handle problems/conflicts.To applyThe Law Society of New South Wales is committed to building and maintaining a respectful and inclusive workplace, appointing the best person for the role and supporting diversity.Applications should contain a CV and cover letter that outlines your key experience and motivations for this role.
