Aboriginal Legal Service WA – Kalgoorlie WA Full Time Fixed Term contract (to 30 June 2025) Salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications, $63,962 to $75,818 pa plus superannuation and applicable regional allowance Salary packaging is available Generous leave provisions of 5 weeks annual leave plus leave loading Access to District allowance and other allowances as eligible 2 weeks additional paid leave for end of year closure Access to additional paid leave for health and well-being Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples are strongly encouraged to apply.About the serviceHope Community Services Limited is funded by the Department of Communities to operate a family and domestic violence hub in Kalgoorlie with the aim of improving access to specialist family and domestic related services to people experiencing family and domestic violence (FDV).The FDV hub in Kalgoorlie – the Mara Pirni Healing Place – is operated by Hope Community Services alongside Ngunytju Tjitji Pirni (NTP) Aboriginal Corporation, One Tree Community Services and Wanslea Family Services and ALSWA.ALSWA's role is to provide a paralegal worker for the hub.Mara Pirni Healing Place was officially launched in December 2020.The ALSWA paralegal worker's role is to help Mara Pirni Healing Place clients access legal advice and representation; provide information to clients about legal matters; and provide community legal education.The paralegal worker will assist clients with referrals to appropriate legal services included ALSWA where appropriate.The paralegal works onsite at Mara Pirni Healing Place as well as providing outreach services at other locations.About the roleThe key responsibilities of the paralegal worker are: To provide accessible and culturally secure legal assistance and information to people experiencing FDV for FDV-related legal issues and other legal issues.To assist clients with appropriate warm referrals to legal service providers.To provide community legal education (CLE) at Mara Pirni Healing Place or other specified locations.Assist ALSWA lawyers by taking instructions from clients about their particular legal issues. The paralegal will be expected to work collaboratively in a team environment with others working at the hub and work collaboratively with other ALSWA staff.This position requires a responsible person who is compassionate and self-motivated with well-developed interpersonal skills and personal integrity.Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.This position also requires knowledge of and/or experience working with family and domestic violence, in particular in Aboriginal communities.About youIf you are passionate about striving for justice for disadvantaged Aboriginal people and want to make a difference, ALSWA is the place for you.The work is both challenging and rewarding.To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria: Knowledge of and/or experience working with FDV, in particular for Aboriginal communities.Ability to work with Aboriginal clients and employees with an appropriate level of cultural understanding, empathy and sensitivity.Ability to assess and determine a client's legal needs for a broad range of legal issues.Ability to deliver accessible and culturally secure community legal education.Knowledge of or the demonstrated ability to develop knowledge of law and legal processes for family and domestic violence related legal issues including but not limited to criminal law, restraining orders, child protection and family law.Knowledge of community-based services including community legal services that can assist hub clients.Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure and maintain confidentiality.Demonstrated organisational and file management skills.Sound communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal).Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team comprising legal and non-legal staff with a willingness to learn and share knowledge with others.Ability to obtain a Working with Children Check Card.Ability to travel when required.
