The University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH), Rural Clinical School- Northern Rivers, University of Sydney provides a multidisciplinary centre of excellence in education of students for clinical practice in rural health. We also conduct research relevant to the priorities and needs of rural communities, with a focus on Aboriginal health research, climate change and health impacts, education research and health services research. The UCRH continues to grow and develop, and we are now seeking to appoint a Research Associate (Level A) to work alongside A/Professor Veronica Matthews and will sit within the NHMRC funded Centre of Research Excellence: Strengthening systems for Indigenous health care Equity (STRIDE) and the NHMRC funded Synergy Grant: Stronger Together as Unified Nations for Community-led Health (STAUNCH). STRIDE/STAUNCH's vision is to achieve health equity through First Nations self-governance, centring community as the source of policy and program solutions. We are seeking a candidate with experience and knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community sector along with research experience or a desire to strengthen research skills in these areas. The UCRH has a footprint in the Northern Rivers, NSW, north to the Mullumbimby region, south to Grafton, west to Bonalbo and east to Ballina/Byron, and works closely with multiple partners to support education, research and workforce development in Northern NSW. The Lismore campus is located within walking distance of the Lismore Base Hospital and, along with our other numerous community and health partners, provides opportunities to support education and research activity in the region. While presence on campus at Lismore is preferred, other locations may be negotiated. Your key responsibilities will be to: Conduct research (either independently or as part of a team) and contribute to knowledge within discipline or area of expertise. Build and strengthen relationships with community. Develop and refine research skills and independent research under the supervision of more senior academic staff within the School/Faculty (with an increasing degree of autonomy). Maintain quality, standards and excellence in any research activities and output. Undertake administration primarily related to their activities at the University. Informally provide mentoring and guidance to students (where appropriate). Contribute to a positive workplace culture within the School/Faculty. Contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled. Maintain an understanding of the University's strategic agenda and contribute to furthering that agenda. Develop profile through conferences, seminars and outreach activities (e.g., community visits). Where appropriate, engage in (or be mentored in) translational research with a view to establishing strong, impactful relationships with outputs such as research and development, commercialisation, improved practices and policy development. About you Relevant degree with at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and management expertise in technical or administrative fields; or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Experience working in research and/or practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander settings. Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Experience in creative research translation and data dissemination activities that are relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with strong media and communication skills. Experience working in collaborative environments with a wide range of stakeholders including researchers, service providers, and policy makers.
