The Bureau of Meteorology is one of the Global Information System Centre (GISC), responsible for collection and exchange of meteorological information in the South East Asia and Pacific region and globally under the WMO Information System (WIS) framework. Exchange of meteorological observation data and numerical weather prediction (NWP) products globally is a vital process for delivering weather and climate services for all meteorological services around the world. All member countries of WMO (World Meteorological Organization) are participating in the data exchange over the Global Telecommunication Systems (GTS), with WIS providing a service-oriented paradigm and adding more functionality to meet new data service requirements and to use new technology. Currently, the Bureau maintains and operates the Computer Message Switching System (CMSS), which is a centerpiece for providing data collection and delivery services, both internationally and nationally, although the Bureau has started the transition from the CMSS to the new Enterprise Integration Platform (EIP).The successful applicant will be responsible, as part of a team under broad direction, for developing, maintaining, and providing support in the CMSS software systems that deliver the data services, and participate in CMSS related operations. The occupant will also work on support of the observation data Decoding System and the Australian Digital Forecast Database (ADFD) system.It will be necessary that the occupant be goal-oriented and be able to work in a team across a number of Bureau subsections and participates in after-hours on-call roster.The occupant will use their effective written and oral communication skills to enable the creation of standard operating procedures, support manuals, and data flows, and be able to effectively communicate with technical staff from across the section and the stakeholders.The occupant will also be required to contribute to, and be aware of, new and emerging technologies for data and information delivery.The occupant will have well-developed professional skills, and will be experienced in working collaboratively in teams, as well as taking responsibility for important operational work. Specifically, the officer will have teamwork and leadership skills appropriate to the Executive Level 1 level in the Australian Government Public Service’s Integrated Leadership System.
