About the opportunity: Our Customer Projects and Services team is currently seeking a Lead Engineer for a permanent position to be based at our Gepps Cross industrial site in South Australia.
As a Tooling Engineer in Engineering and Maintenance, you will play a critical role in maintaining the Plastic Injection tooling, together with managing the design, purchase, and commissioning of future equipment to suit business requirements.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, Manufacturing, the Tooling Engineer's expertise will be essential in providing technical leadership, asset management, maintenance, and design for the delivery of tooling projects and the provision of training to production teams.
Key responsibilities: Tool Design and Development: Design and engineer moulds for injection moulding, blow moulding, or compression moulding processes, ensuring they meet product specifications and production requirements.
Utilize CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) to create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of mould components.
Material Selection and Analysis: Analyse and select appropriate materials for mould construction based on production needs, cost efficiency, and durability.
Conduct material testing and validation to ensure compatibility with production processes.
Process Optimization: Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize moulding processes for efficiency and quality.
Implement process improvements and modifications to reduce cycle times, enhance production rates, and minimize waste.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve tooling issues that arise during production, including defects, wear, and breakdowns.
Develop and execute maintenance schedules for moulding tools to ensure reliability and longevity.
Documentation and Compliance: Maintain comprehensive documentation of tooling designs, specifications, and procedures in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
Ensure that all tooling practices comply with safety and environmental regulations.
Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with product development, quality assurance, and production teams to ensure tooling aligns with overall project goals.
Provide technical support and training to production staff regarding tooling operation and maintenance.
Project Management: Lead tooling projects from conception through to implementation, managing timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
Conduct feasibility studies and cost analyses for new tooling projects, presenting findings to stakeholders.
About you: Our ideal candidate will be a Mechanical Engineer or equivalent tradesperson with 5+ years of experience in mould design and tooling engineering, preferably within the plastics or metal industry.
Your proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other design tools for mould creation will be supported by a tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
Key skills and experience: Advanced understanding of moulding processes, including injection, blow, and compression mouldingExperience with advanced moulding techniques and technologies including multi-cavity moulds and hot runner systemsFamiliarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologiesHands-on experience in leading and delivering medium to large projectsProven ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholder groups and strong commercial acumenDemonstrated ability to problem solve, work independently, and manage own time to meet objectivesA growth mindset through well-developed digital skills and a technical aptitudeWell-developed interpersonal skills coupled with a customer-centric approachAll applicants must have working rights in Australia at the time of application and will be required to provide documented evidence if selected for Interview.
