About the role
Transurban operates 18 toll road assets in Australia, including 184 km of open road and 65 km of tunnels, generating $5.2B in toll revenue. Our roads are among the safest and most technologically advanced globally. The Asset Strategy function is key to managing risk and optimising performance, developing strategies that ensure ongoing investment meets both concession deed requirements and business goals.
The Senior Principal Engineer – Fire Safety is the senior technical leader responsible for overseeing all Fire Safety engineering aspects of Transurban’s toll road and related infrastructure assets. This role demands a high level of expertise in Fire Safety engineering, strategic vision, and technical leadership to ensure all engineering solution designs meet the deed concessions and are aligned with core Transurban objectives for safe, reliable, and profitable operations.
Collaborating with the Senior Engineering Manager – Fire Safety, you will oversee the asset management lifecycle, including Engineering Change processes, strategic planning, and defect management.
In collaboration with peers and the broader Engineering team, you will oversee Engineering Change processes, maintenance strategy and defect management and will set the long-term asset management lifecycle for fire safety systems.
Moreover, the Senior Principal Engineer – Fire Safety will ensure all engineering solutions developed are aligned with core Asset Strategy objectives including relevant regulatory standards. The role also requires good business and cross-functional stakeholder management skills as the ROAD functions work together to achieve the collective outcomes tied to the enterprise.
This role requires exceptional Fire Safety engineering expertise, strong business acumen, and excellent stakeholder management skills. You will ensure all engineering solutions comply with regulatory standards and core strategic objectives. Day-to-day, you will:
* Develop whole of concession life asset strategies with the Asset Engineering team
* Characterise risk, value, and cost opportunities for asset classes
* Set acceptable risk envelopes based on regulatory, concession, and business requirements
* Collaborate with the Asset Management Strategy team (including other Senior Principal Engineers) to evolve risk profiles and valuations
* Own Code of Management Standards for asset classes across Transurban
* Establish and maintain engineering standards and procedures
* Provide technical authority on design, construction, and maintenance.
This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:
* Tertiary degree in Engineering as minimum, further education desired such as Masters or PhD
* Chartered registration with Engineers Australia or relevant jurisdictional professional registration body
* Recognised externally as an expert in Engineering discipline, contributing to the profile and position of Engineering across stakeholder and community groups
* Experience in establishing, coaching and developing technical Engineering talent and skills (desirable)
* Experience in working with regulatory bodies to advise, interpret and set policy (desirable)
* Ability to work with broad stakeholder groups and translate technical into simple business terms (desirable)
