Premier’s Department Assistant Commissioner (Identified) (req40201) Part-time board member role (approximately 1day per month) Advise the NSW Government on how to improve healthy Country The Natural Resources Commission (the Commission) is looking for a highly skilled Assistant Commissioner with expertise in natural resource management and experience engaging diverse Aboriginal groups and senior levels of government. In this Aboriginal Identified position, you will advise, support, and when requested deputise for the Commissioner to provide independent, evidenced-based advice to the NSW Government. Your role will ensure this advice incorporates Aboriginal cultural knowledge and contemporary natural resource management practices. About the Natural Resources Commission The Commission was established in 2004 by the Natural Resources Commission Act 2003, with a broad function of providing the NSW Government with independent credible advice on managing natural resources in the social, economic and environmental interests of NSW. The Commission is an independent executive agency reporting to the NSW Premier. Under the Act, the Commission is the Commissioner, and the sole decision maker on advice that the Commission provides to the NSW Government. The Commissioner may delegate any of its functions other than this power of delegation, to an Assistant Commissioner or to a committee of persons (at least one member of which is the Commissioner or an Assistant Commissioner). The Commissioner has established a small team of staff and delegated the management of the Commission to an Executive Director. About the role. In this role, you will: attend six Commission meetings per year (in person in the Commission’s office in Sydney or online) provide strategic advice to the Commissioner and staff on Aboriginal natural resource management, helping the Commission deliver credible independent advice to the NSW Government on complex natural resource management issues that impact upon Healthy Country support culturally informed and evidence-based decision making, enhancing team performance, Commission governance and overall advice to government (when delegated) chair inquiries, reviews and expert panels on natural resource management issues foster a deeper understanding amongst the Commission and staff of cultural, environmental, social and economic rights and interests of Aboriginal communities relevant to natural resources management facilitate meaningful engagement with diverse Aboriginal communities and other stakeholders fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing across the broader sector and actively engage with networks to support achievement of shared natural resources management and Healthy Country goals act on behalf of the Commissioner when requested so that the Commission makes best use of all its resources when specifically required by the Commissioner, exercise the powers of the Commission, within agreed limits. About You The successful applicant will possess at least the following experience, knowledge, skills and other attributes: Aboriginality (for Aboriginal Identified roles) Proven experience and skills with engaging diverse Aboriginal groups and senior levels of government Proven expertise in contributing to the analysis of natural resource management issues, including use of cultural knowledge Understanding and knowledge of working in Aboriginal communities Relevant tertiary qualifications and extensive expertise in natural resource management in NSW including areas such as water, forest and land management, biodiversity, agriculture, economics, social and environmental sciences Extensive breadth of understanding of contemporary natural resource management issues Acknowledged as a credible, independent, impartial, and effective adviser.
