Your Opportunity
Based In Palmerston the Transition to Work Youth Mentor role is pivotal in guiding young people aged 15 to 24 on their journey toward employment, education, and brighter futures. In this impactful position, you’ll engage creatively with youth from the moment they join the program, offering individualised and group support to strengthen their social and emotional wellbeing. By fostering resilience and confidence, you’ll empower clients to pursue their education, training, and employment goals.
As an experienced Youth Mentor, you’ll collaborate closely with Youth Employment Specialists to implement tailored support plans that address each young person’s unique needs. Mission Australia’s Transition to Work program offers a cost-free, life-changing pathway for young people transitioning from school to employment or further education, including apprenticeships and traineeships.
Your Key Responsibilities
* Promote and sustain early youth engagement in programs through outreach, drop-in sessions, and unstructured interactions to create a welcoming and supportive environment.
* Provide practical support by empowering young people with practical tools and guidance to enhance their self-worth, enabling them to actively participate in their personal and professional development.
* Design, facilitate, and evaluate group workshops tailored to meet client needs, fostering skills and confidence in youth as they work towards their employment and education goals.
* Document and manage case files, ensuring compliance with Mission Australia’s protocols and maintaining confidentiality in alignment with program requirements.
* Adhere to the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, proactively addressing any safety concerns affecting the wellbeing of youth in Mission Australia’s care.
* Contribute to program growth by introducing improvement initiatives, identifying innovative methods, and trialling new approaches to engage clients effectively.
* Work closely with Employment Specialists to create individualised support plans and connect clients to employment, education, or training opportunities.
* Build and maintain positive and effective relationships with local youth services and facilitate workshops, strengthening community connections and enhancing support networks for clients.
* Provide pro-social modelling and lived-experience insights, offering relatable guidance and support to help youth feel understood and motivated.
Requirements for Success
With a significant background in the Youth Services, Employment Programs, and/or Community Services sectors, you will be confident in your ability to quickly connect and engage with young people using your knowledge and understanding of current issues impacting them and overcoming barriers to engagement. Other requirements include:
* Tertiary qualifications in youth work, social and emotional wellbeing, community services, or a related field.
* Minimum of 12 months working with youth and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, with an understanding of cultural systems and protocols.
* Experience in youth services or employment programs, with tertiary qualifications in youth work, social and emotional wellbeing, community services, or a related field.
* Articulate and confident in voicing opinions and advocating for clients in team settings, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to foster and sustain relationships with young people, key community stakeholders, and other services to support client engagement and program success.
* Skilled in balancing program deliverables with innovative and creative strategies to enhance youth participation and meet individual needs.
* Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills, computer literacy, and the ability to meet program KPIs effectively.
* Must hold Full driver licence with no restrictions
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
