Commencing in early January 2025 the Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship opportunities will be located at our Portland Aluminium Smelter.
As part of this four-year Apprenticeship Program you will be:
1. Provided with on the job & formalised TAFE training to achieve a nationally recognised trade certificate.
2. Trained in all Portland Aluminium safe work systems and health and safety requirements. Ultimately, using a variety of tooling and machinery such as centre lathes, grinding and milling machines, drill presses, welders and other specialised tooling including optilign.
3. Rotating through different areas of the plant, giving you the opportunity to develop your sitewide knowledge.
4. Working in a dynamic, fast paced, heavy duty environment. The work can be physically demanding, and a high degree of manual dexterity is essential.
5. Involved in the diagnosis, repair, servicing and maintenance of components of fixed plant mechanical equipment such as belt conveyors, crushers, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, ship unloaders and cranes.
6. Learning how to identify mechanical components, evaluate parts for re-use or replacement whilst operating within engineering tolerances on items such as shafts, pulleys, gearbox and pump parts.
7. Assisting in job scoping, pre work and execution including the development of maintenance work instructions and isolation procedures.
8. Trained in the use of precision measuring tools, work from technical drawings and sketches that will help you operate close measurement tolerances.

What you can bring to the role
To play a part in our ongoing success, we are seeking someone who has:
13. A high dedication and focus towards safety.
14. A good academic record with a proven interest in mechanical fitting and/or machining.
15. Involvement in any related extracurricular activities or have gained relevant knowledge in that field.
16. A current, valid Australian ‘Learners’ Drivers Licence or working towards.
17. Completed a minimum of year 10, with a high pass in Mathematics and English
18. Solid school attendance record
19. Completed a pre-apprenticeship, and relevant trade-based work experience is highly desirable
