About the Division / Team
Our Hunter Valley network primarily services the Hunter Valley coal chain – the world’s largest thermal coal export operation – by providing an efficient and reliable rail transportation system between mines and the Port of Newcastle.We manage the movement of around 250 trains per day on our network. Around half of these being coal trains and the other half comprised of passenger services, as well as grain, general intermodal, and other bulk freight trains.
About the Opportunity
Joining the Heavy Plant Operations team, you will play a vital role in providing electrical maintenance services, conducting breakdown repairs, and conducting on-track operations for heavy plant assets and track machines across diverse sites within the ARTC network, spanning NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, and WA.
Given the field-based nature of this role within an itinerant team, you should anticipate frequent travel and be prepared to work a shift roster consistently requiring you to work away from home. Living in Goulburn is not a prerequisite, but you must reside within a 4-hour driving distance.
In addition to technical expertise, this position demands a strong commitment to customer service. You will be responsible for engaging and negotiating with equipment operators, contractors, safeworkers, trades staff and supervisors. This collaborative effort is essential to ensuring the safety and reliability of operating plant assets within the defined rail network of ARTC.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct inspections, scheduled maintenance, and breakdown repairs of Heavy Plant assets and designated plant.
2. Operate plant and equipment, maintaining operational control, and provide direction and support to other operational personnel.
3. Test machinery to ensure effective performance of core duties.
4. Advise and assist Plant staff and Work Group Leader on potential issues affecting plant safety and performance.
5. Appropriately manage tools, electrical spares, and consumable stock provided.
6. Assist plant mechanics, maintenance crews, and operators with fault diagnosis and repair.
7. Provide input into decisions regarding plant repair, upgrade, and overhaul.
8. Supervise maintenance contractors as needed and contribute to the development of trade skills and knowledge of apprentices through mentoring, coaching, and education.
9. Complete all necessary paperwork/recordkeeping, including electronic asset management systems, to meet regulatory requirements and maintain systems integrity.
10. Participate in projects and undertake other duties as requested.
About You
To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:
Essential Selection Criteria:
11. Possession of a relevant electrical trade certificate (or equivalent).
12. Experience in managing machine critical control systems and PLCs.
13. Proven experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electronic systems.
14. Demonstrated experience in maintaining heavy rail and earthmoving equipment.
15. Willingness to work on a variable shift roster.
16. Self-motivated individual.
17. Dedicated commitment to safety and quality assurance.
18. Strong written and oral communication skills appropriate to the duties of the position.
19. Ability to work both independently and in a close team environment.
20. Holder of a Class C driver's license.
Desirable Selection Criteria:
21. Operational experience with high-value plant teams and equipment.
22. Basic knowledge of railway infrastructure and safe working systems.
