About the OrganisationHope Vale is located 370 kms north of Cairns and 46 kms Northwest of Cooktown on the Cape York Peninsula. Located in a valley, the Shire incorporates 110,000 hectares of land comprising various landscapes, including significant wetlands, freshwater springs, rivers, and beaches. The township of Hope Vale is surrounded by ranges, coastal dunes, coloured sands, and beaches. The township is a 60-minute drive from Elim Beach (home of the famous-coloured sands) and Cape Bedford. The road is now sealed between Hope Vale and Cooktown which has improved connectivity to the township, particularly during the wet season.
Land in the Shire is made up of parcels that are Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) tenure under the trusteeship of the Council for the town designated DOGIT, land under the trusteeship of the Hope Vale Congress Corporation and large block of freehold. Part of this freehold block has been subdivided to provide a subdivision for freehold residential allotments.
The Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council consists of the mayor and four (4) councillors, and the Executive Management Team is made up of the Chief Executive Officer and senior managers in the following areas: Finance and Corporate Services, Social Services, Operations.
The annual budget for the Council is approximately $25M with a staff establishment of around 70 people. The Council Chambers are in Hope Vale, but they also have an established office in Cairns.
Council prides itself on its governance and financial management practices. In this regard, it has been able to achieve a low risk financial sustainability rating for the past 12 years in a row and has been able to finalise annual financial statements signed off by the Queensland Audit office in late July or early August for the past 12 years as well.
Council has been able to establish good business practices in its operational areas and maintains Principal Contractor status for all building construction works and civil construction works undertaken by Council in Hope Vale. Other services provided by Council from a social perspective include an Aged Care Facility, a Commonwealth Home Support Program, an Indigenous Knowledge Centre, a radio station, a Youth Service, a Child Care/Day Care Centre, and a Kindergarten.
About the RoleAs one of three Directors reporting to the CEO your role will be varied and rewarding and provide you with an unrivalled opportunity to use your initiative and grow with the business. Taking ownership of this portfolio, you will be involved in driving a range of projects across all facets of Council's community service activities. Capitalising on a range of resources available you will engage the community to participate in activities and programs you design that are age appropriate and that ensure their ongoing wellbeing.
You will contribute to the ongoing development of the variety of community services available and bring a passion for all things people and importantly, focus on developing the performance of the workforce enabling staff to bring out the best in themselves.

For a motivated manager with experience in community services and wellbeing this is a rare and exciting opportunity to expand your capability across the broad variety of services that Council offers.
You will ideally:
Be degree qualified in a relevant discipline and/or have a minimum of 5 years' experience in a community services management capacity.Have a sound working knowledge of community services development principles and practices or the ability to pick up knowledge quickly.Have expertise in research, presentations, and writing, particularly reports to Council.A demonstrated ability to manage programmes within budgets and to contract parameters.Be able to demonstrate a high level of innovation, communication, negotiation and people skills and a proven ability to manage and interface with both public and/or private sector partners.Be an enthusiastic individual focused on helping to set the team up for success.Be accountable, approachable and customer focused and someone who is naturally curious and uses their initiative to further develop both their skills and knowledge.Why this Role?Hope Vale's community facilities are well-regarded, and Council has sound governance structures in place. Importantly, you will be guided and supported around any legislative requirements of the role.
With Cooktown 30 minutes away and Cairns a 4.5 hours' drive you can enjoy all the attractions of Far North Queensland and have access to the hospital, medical clinic, restaurants, and various activities in the region. Hope Vale is known as the least 'remote' of Queensland's remote communities, and Council is regarded as one of the most efficiently run Indigenous entities on the Cape and recognised for its strong financial position.
Relocation Assistance will be provided together with an executive level salary dependent on experience, 12% Super, fully maintained vehicle, house, laptop and mobile phone and 5 weeks annual leave.
